Weingut Georg Breuer, Berg Roseneck Riesling 2015

The Wine Advocate

The 2015 Rheingau Riesling Rüdesheim Berg Roseneck opens very precise and clear but with darker, richer and more concentrated fruit compared to the 2016, which is more delicate and bright. There are also lovely flinty aromas of crushed stones and slight hints of caramel. Full-bodied, round and intense, with generous fruit but also a firm structure built by tannin, minerals and acidity, this is a rich but finessed and elegant Berg Roseneck with a very long and salty finish. This is highly complex and will age terrifically well. Tasted in October 2017. Release date: unknown.

Tasting Theresa Breuer's most recent vintages is a always a highlight while traveling through the Rheingau. Her Rieslings are lean, straight and very mineral, and although they might appear a bit austere in their youth, they are highly refined and can age terrifically well, revealing their complexity year after year a little bit more. While the Berg Schlossberg has always been the primus inter pares, Theresa has improved the Rauenthal Nonnenthal enormously in the past years. The wine has another, more restrained character, but its complexity and finesse is truly remarkable. In 2016, you have the choice between three outstanding wines, since the Berg Roseneck is another highlight of the series. I have also tasted a few older vintages, of which the 2013 is already shining bright. Readers shouldn't miss out on trying the Terra Montosa, which I have never tasted in a better quality thus far. This is great value for money as it can compete with many "GG" Rieslings of there regions easily. Last but not least, if you like your Pinot Noir pure, straight and fresh, Theresa's 2015s are just perfect: Neither too ripe nor too rich, but firm and mineral, driven by the crystalline terroirs of Rüdesheim. The "B" is a selection of there very best three barrels and is one of the finest Pinot Noirs I have tasted in the Rheingau. It's like a knife that could cut through Hajo Becker's rich and super ripe (but great) bottlings from the Walkenberg like a knife. Their styles couldn't be more different.
