"The top wine of the estate, and the maybe the greatest St Chinian I’ve tasted (albeit from barrel), the 2015 St Chinian 1er Vin is a blend of Syrah and Grenache, from schist soils, that was completely destemmed, and aged in a mix of demi-muids and barrels. Its inky purple color is followed by a deep, layered red that offers sensational notes of black raspberries, black cherries, classy oak and spice. Possessing terrific purity, good acidity and high quality tannin, it’s still incredibly young, and therefore riskier to gauge, yet it’s no doubt an outstanding wine and bodes well for the 2015 vintage!
A new estate for me, I was able to taste these wines with their consultant Claude Gros. While incredibly young (which makes any judgements difficult), the raw material here is stunning, and these are some wines I can’t wait to try again from bottle."

"60% Grenache, 40% Syrah from the schistous far north of the appellation. Aged for up to 24 months in large Austrian (Stockinger, presumably) casks of 500 and 600 litres. Yield just 14 hl/ha. Claude Gros advises. 15-day fermentation and then a 15-day maceration. The label says 15% but the background notes say 14.5%. Massive purity on the nose. Massive intensity of fruit and slightly dry tannins at this stage suggest massive ambition. Great precision. Tom Hills is clearly a name to watch. Drink 2018-2026"
