The Wine Advocate

"The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige Blanc switches up the varietal mix. A blend of 80% barrel-fermented Roussanne with steel-fermented and aged Grenache Blanc and Clairette, it offers up toasty, nutty scents of roasted cashews, pineapple and coconut. It's a cavalcade of bold flavors, broad on the palate yet long and briny on the finish. It should prove capable of aging up to a decade, but I'd opt for drinking it young for its flamboyant exuberance."

"And a candidate for the white of the vintage, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige Blanc is 80% old vine Roussanne and 20% Grenache Blanc (there’s splash of other varieties in there) and was bottled the day before this tasting, although it wasn’t showing worse for it. It has thrilling amounts of buttered citrus, pineapple, stone fruits and brioche, with its oak component perfectly integrated and pushed into the background. Full-bodied, layered and incredibly textured, yet always fresh and pure, hats off to the Sabon family for this sensational white! It will be better this time next year, and like the base cuvée, can be cellared for decades.

One of the finest run estates in all of Châteauneuf du Pape is Domaine de la Janasse, which is managed today by the brother and sister pair of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Looking at the 2014 and 2015 releases, both lean towards the more finesse-driven end of the spectrum, with Pinot Noir-like textures and less overt concentration than past vintages. That’s certainly expected in a vintage like 2014, but is surprising in a vintage like 2015. While the estate’s reds, both Châteauneuf du Papes and Côtes du Rhône, are well known, don’t make the mistake of missing their whites, as these are some of the most impressive and age-worthy wines in just about every vintage. It’s also worth noting the new Isabelle Sabon Clos St Antonin releases, also reviewed in this report. This is a new estate located just beside the Plan de Dieu and they release four cuvées: one white and three reds."
